I have accumulated a multidisciplinary training since my first years of training. After finishing my degree, I co-authored a paper on experimental nuclear physics at the University of Chile, where I worked with UHV and alpha particle radiation. The same year I participated in a select group of candidates attending the Summer School of the "Instituto Balseiro" in Argentina, where I did my first work on FMR and thin magnetic films, being published in Physical Review B. During my Master's thesis at the University of Chile, I collaborated closely with the Center for Development of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (CEDENNA), where I gained experience working with thin film manufacturing systems (sputtering and chemical vapor deposition), porous alumina cathodic anodization, magnetic and electrical characterization of metallic films in antidote (MFM, AGFM, VSM, SQUID, FMR, four contact technique) and surface characterization (AFM, and STM) and XPS. During my PhD at the University of Exeter in the UK, I was part of the first cohort of the Metamaterials Doctoral Training Centre. In addition to the scientific experience gained in magneto-optical characterization (MOKE, TRSKM), synchrotron radiation techniques (XRD, XMCD, XAS, XRMS, XRR) and new knowledge gained by working on SEM and FIB, I was part of an intensive soft skills training containing, among other things, cognitive-behavioral training, leadership training, project management, public participation and learning and teaching in higher education training (LETH). Finally, during my current postdoc I have acquired knowledge in the field of spintronics and skyrmions, performing several time beams in synchrotron facilities all over Europe to characterize chiral magnetic systems in an external magnetic field and in a time-sensitive manner.
Grants and funding
- CONICYT Scholarship for National Teachers (2011-2013)
- Beca Chile for PhD abroad (2014 -2018)
- Scholarship "Center for doctoral training in metamaterials" - 11000 GBP for 4 years for doctoral execution expenses
I strongly believe in the importance of informing and reaching out to society to show the benefits of my research. Ultimately, it is our society that should receive the benefits and retribution of our work.
I have a strong interest in promoting science to non-specialist audiences. I believe it is important to motivate critical thinking with simple explanations of how we scientists understand our world through science. I also want to encourage the younger generation to become scientists. In this sense, I have participated in several initiatives of scientific popularization since my first days as a physics student, such as the science fairs organized by the University of Chile and the initiative "1000 classrooms, 1000 scientists" organized by CONICYT. These events were aimed at children from low-income families. Once I moved to Europe, I quickly started working as an outreach officer for the SPIE student chapter at Exeter University during 2014-2015 and then as president of the newly formed Optics and Photonics Society of Exeter University (EUOPS) from 2015 to 2016. During this period, we organised and participated in various outreach events, including the annual Sidmouth Science Festival (2016-2017), Big Bang Fair South West (2015-2018), the Honiton Festival of Imagination (2018), International Day of Light (2018) and regular visits throughout Exeter University's laboratories and facilities for children from nearby schools. In 2017 I won first place in the "Optical Outreach Games" held in San Diego with an outreach activity to create a spectrometer with recycling materials, a CD-ROM and a guide with activities and examples for teachers and the general public.
