Improving Carbon Nanotube/Polymer Interactions in Nanocomposites F.Aviles, J.V.Cauich-Rodriguez, P.Toro, M Yazdani-Pedram, H. Aguilar; Roham Rafiee BookSection A review of carbon nanotube (CNT) functionalization methods to improve the interfacial interactions with polymers is addressed. The most common CNT functionalization methods to address the issue of poor interfacial interactions between CNTs and their host polymer matrix in CNT polymer composites are discussed. These CNT chemical modifications include oxidations, silanizations, fluorinations, aminations and other less conventional methods such as modifications with itaconic acid. After a first section focusing on the functionalization methods, the second section of the chapter covers specific functionalizations for interactions of CNTs with thermosettings, thermoplastic, and elastomers, and briefly discusses their interfacial interactions towards improving mechanical and thermal properties of such functionalized nanocomposites.
