My research is focussed on the ecology and physiology of marine algae, with emphasis on the impact of climate change on the biodiversity in temperate and polar coastal ecosystems. I study how CO2-driven ocean acidification and temperature rise, coastal eutrophication and radiation stress modulate photosynthesis, nitrogen and carbon assimilation such to influence algal growth. I characterise the photosynthetic performance of algae using chlorophyll fluorometry, which is further specified by biochemical analyses of key enzymes and metabolites as well as the oxidative stress management. To put my research in an ecologically realistic context, I determine the environmental conditions in algal habitats by taking water samples and using a wide range of scientific instruments such as multi-parameter probes and hyper-spectral radiometers.
